GREENHANCEnbt

Growing Resilience by Exploring Methods to Enhance Urban Agriculture for Human Well -being, Community and Bio-Diversity Enrichment

The GREENHANCEnbt project aims to advance Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) by exploring the enhancement of Urban Agriculture (UA) as a tool for biodiversity conservation and human well-being in urban areas. This project will investigate key synergies and trade-offs between ecological and social dimensions within UA. Target cities include Barcelona (Spain), Malmö (Sweden), and Torino (Italy), serving as case studies for NBS integration in urban settings.

The project is structured around a new framework, Nature-Based Thinking (NBT), which emphasizes the interconnections among nature, organizational governance, and community engagement. By studying these relationships, GREENHANCEnbt will generate guidelines for sustainable UA governance and management, aiming to enhance biodiversity, community health, and social cohesion. Key outputs will include policy recommendations, best practice guides, and simplified protocols for community-based biodiversity monitoring.

European Partner

Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences,SLU-( SE) – Project Leader, University of Torino (IT), University of Sassari (IT), Centre for Ecological Research and Forestry Applications (ES), Barcelona Regional (ES), Municipality of Torino (IT), Botildenborg S.(SE).

The project in Torino

The Municipality of Torino will address ecological and social goals through the governance and promotion of UA, including education for youth and community engagement. In Torino, citizen science initiatives will monitor local biodiversity, particularly butterfly populations, enhancing community involvement and contributing to UA policy development.

Pratical steps

The project will implement five work packages (WPs) focused on analyzing biodiversity indicators, community engagement, and UA governance. Actions include:

  • Developing community-based biodiversity monitoring protocols.
  • Conducting citizen science workshops in Torino, Malmö, and Barcelona.
  • Collaborating with local stakeholders to design UA governance models that align with NBT principles.
  • Creating educational materials and participatory activities to engage diverse demographics, including the elderly in Barcelona, youth in Torino, and migrant communities in Malmö.
